Alice In Wonderland [VHS] [1951]

Alice In Wonderland [VHS] [1951]

Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn, Richard Haydn, Sterling Holloway, Jerry Colonna
Director: Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, Wilfred Jackson

Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, and so on. The characterisation is very strong, illustrating how hard the Disney team worked to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. --Tom Keogh

I purchased this product and within 3 days it had arrived in better condition than stated so I was VERY pleased. The film itself is another shining example of the genius work at Disney. The colour and animation are once again perfect, the humour and fun of the film makes it watchable for all ages and thre seems to be a timeless quality to it. For any Lewis Carrol, Disney, or just cartoon fan, this is a must have.

This may not include every film he directed, and some of the ones it does include are pretty awful - or at least very dated - but it is a stunning collection all the same, a reminder of just what a great director can do with stars whose limitations as actors can sometime be all too obvious in less hands. Well worth acquiring and all Scots will enjoy Katherine Hepburn as Mary.

Peter Pan [DVD] [1953]

Peter Pan [DVD] [1953]

Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Bobby Driscoll, Kathryn Beaumont, Hans Conried, Bill Thompson, Heather Angel
Director: Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, Wilfred Jackson

Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instils an element of child-like wonder. The 1953 version of James M Barrie's story is colourfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: children who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fuelled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

Why are old Disney's some much better than more recent ones? Because much more is left to your imagination and the action is less fast and less aggressive. Also, verbal cracks and jokes are much more in abundance.

Peter Pan's definetely one of the best Disney movies. The plot is great, the characters are convincing (even Tinkerbell) and emotions are never over-the-top or sacharine. There's enough action in it to keep you spellbound (even at 33!!).

The great thing about is that the whole story makes completely sense in the eyes of many a kid (I have 3). It feeds on their imagination & still expects them to make clever judgements.

Enough said, it's a good story, brilliantly drawn. Modern day kids still love it!

John Ford directed this deeply dark vision of poverty and revenge in 1920s Ireland in 1935 and got an Oscar for his efforts. And rightly so. It tells the story of Gypo Nolan, (not the sharpest knife in the drawer and brilliantly played by Victor McLaglen), who after being ousted from the equivalent of the IRA during the Irish Rebellion becomes destitute and hungry. In order to put food on the table and save his sweetheart from prostitution he decides to turn-coat and inform on one of his former comrades for the reward money. Then things really start to slide... This grim fog-laden tale is so thick with atmosphere and tension that it had me on the edge of my seat all the way through.

Ford made 'The Informer' the same year he made the equally brilliant, though entirely different, 'The Whole Town's Talking' with Edward G. Robinson in a rare comedy performance. They came long before the westerns for which Ford's name has become so well-known and these two earlier films show what a versatile and talented director he really was.

Suspicion [DVD] [1941]

Suspicion [DVD] [1941]

Rated: Parental Guidance
Staring: Cary Grant, Reginald Sheffield, Constance Worth, Joan Fontaine, Cedric Hardwicke
Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Repeated viewings can't dispel the shock of the final scene in this classic 1941 romantic mystery--a brief but disorienting confrontation that suddenly inverts the heroine's mounting conviction that she's married a murderer, forcing us to reconsider virtually every scene and line of dialogue that's preceded it. It's a masterful coup de grace for director Alfred Hitchcock, who has built a puzzle around the corrosive power of suspicion, threaded with deft ambiguities that toy with dramatic conventions and character archetypes in nearly every frame. As embodied by Joan Fontaine, who nabbed an Oscar in this second outing with the director, Lina McLaidlaw is a buttoned-up, bookish heiress whose prim exterior conceals longings for a more engaged emotional life. Her solution materializes in the darkly handsome Johnnie Aysgarth, a gambler, womaniser, and spendthrift who flirts, then pursues, and soon marries her. As Aysgarth, Cary Grant is both irresistible and sinister, capable of deceit and petty theft, as well as grander designs on his bride's impending fortune.

Lina's passion for Johnnie is clouded by each new revelation about his apparent dishonesty, from clandestine gambling to real estate development schemes; more troubling are clues implicating him in the death of his best friend, and the prospect that Johnnie may be slowly poisoning Lina herself. By the time we see him ascending a darkened staircase with a suspicious glass of milk, an image made all the more indelible through the spectral glow the director captures in the glass, the evidence seems damning indeed. In fact, even as Hitchcock stacks the deck against Johnnie, and takes full advantage of Grant's skill at conveying such menace, the director also dots his landscape with visual clues to Lina's own neurotic (and erotic) obsessions. The final scene forces us to reevaluate her behavior while leaving enough of a cloud over Johnnie to rob him, and us, of a complete exoneration. It's a wicked, unsettling payoff to a brilliantly executed thriller. --Sam Sutherland
