Romancing The Stone / The Jewel Of The Nile [DVD] [1986]

Romancing The Stone / The Jewel Of The Nile [DVD] [1986]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito, Zack Norman, Alfonso Arau
Director: Lewis Teague, Robert Zemeckis

In 1984 Romancing the Stone was a huge hit for director Robert Zemeckis (who later went on to make Forrest Gump, Contact and Castaway among others) thanks in no small part to the winning team of Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito. The chemistry between all three stars is infectious, but Turner steals the show from the guys, playing a pushy romance novelist who gets stuck among some dangerous figures in Colombia and has only a rumpled guide (Michael Douglas) as an ally. Zemeckis--whose specialty at the time was creating set pieces of raucous action (as in his Back to the Future trilogy)--keeps things hopping with lots of kinetic material. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

The Jewel of the Nile is a moderately entertaining sequel that pales by comparison to its predecessor. Romance novelist Kathleen Turner and retired soldier-of-fortune Michael Douglas return as a now-complacent couple. Bored with life on a yacht, they find excitement thrust upon them when she accepts a speaking engagement in the Middle East. Once there, she is abducted and finds herself involved with the "jewel" everyone is chasing. Douglas teams up once more with Danny DeVito to rescue his love. Less charming and more predictable than the original, this suffers for one simple reason: the characters have nowhere to go. In the original story we watched Turner blossom from timid storyteller to lusty adventuress. In this flick she is too much like all the other action adventure babes we've seen before. The same trio of stars reunited to better effect in DeVito's dark comedy The War of the Roses. --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

Now you wouldn't believe me if I said this, but I think Jewel of the nile is the better of the two. Why? You are asking. Romancing the stone is great, but lacked the action then it did with the romance. Yes, Romancing the stone was too romantic for me, still enjoyed it though. Jewel of the nile however is quite different, there is a bit of romance, but it has more comedy and action.

So, do see both films, but don't expect to much from Romancing the stone if you're an action type.

Terms Of Endearment [1983] [DVD] [1984]

Terms Of Endearment [1983] [DVD] [1984]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels
Director: James L. Brooks

When Terms of Endearment was released in 1983, director and writer James L Brooks was lauded for his depiction of a complex mother/daughter relationship. For his leading ladies he chose actresses with two of the strongest personalities in Hollywood, but armed with an exceptionally witty script and endless patience he eventually drew magnificent performances from Shirley Maclaine as Aurora and Debra Winger as her daugher Emma, assisted considerably by Jack Nicholson's considerate professionalism. As the philandering retired astronaut who beds Maclaine and then provides her with surprising support in the film's dark later moments, Nicholson shines with comic brilliance which earned him an Oscar.

It was no secret that Maclaine and Winger could barely contain a mutual antipathy on set. Yet they strike sparks off each other on screen. When comedy turns to tragedy with the development of Emma's cancer, the laughs continue even while the tear ducts are being given a good work out. In the glory days of Hollywood, this would have been acknowledged a great "women's picture" and its weepy credentials are impeccable. It stands out as a warm, accessible work that admirably rejects sugary sentiment in favour of the realistic rough edges that characterise most human relationships.

On the DVD: Presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, this DVD is ideal for home cinema viewing. The picture and sound quality are fine, benefiting Michael Gore's gentle, memorable music and bringing the best out of Andrzej Bartkowiak's luminous photography. In addition to the original theatrical trailer, the major extra is the director's commentary in which James L Brooks reminisces with coproducer Penney Finkelman and production designer Polly Platt. They look back at their impressive work with a touching degree of wonder and apprentice directors should take note when Brooks recalls his steep learning curve in managing his leading ladies. --Piers Ford

The eighties were know as a decade of misfires for the academy awards. They were under constant scrutiny for apparently awarding lesser, or as Tarantino put it, "coffee table fun" films and blatantly ignoring the more radical, art-house genre. Terms of Endearment was one of those such film criticised. Sure, it is a quirky, shifty, funny/serious kind of film. There pre and post this film there have been many others of similar genre. But Terms of Endearment is different, special in a way. It can really grow on you. You care about the characters, you share their ups and downs, feel their love and pain. You live the endearments. Brooks manages to get the very best out of his wonderful cast, and though he could have made it a soppy love story between mother and daughter, he shot Endearment with careful subtlety that makes it evolve into a real life story rather than a Hollywood story, mirroring the beautiful words of Larry McMurtry. Because there is no sugar coating and Hollywood in this film the emotions are raw, passion flaring. Terms of Endearment remain a true undisputed American classic.

Mars Attacks! [DVD] [1997]

Mars Attacks! [DVD] [1997]

Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over
Staring: Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Annette Bening, Glenn Close
Director: Tim Burton

It's enlightening to view Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burton's eye-popping, schlock tribute to 1950s UFO movies actually plays better on video than it did in cinemas. The idea of invading aliens ray-gunning the big-name movie stars in the cast is a cleverly subversive one, and the bulb-headed, funny-sounding animated Martians are pretty nifty, but it all seemed to be spread thin on the big screen. On video, however, the movie's kooky humour seems a bit more concentrated. The Earth actors (most of whom get zapped or kidnapped for alien science experiments) include Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger, Michael J Fox, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, Tom Jones and Pam Grier. --Jim Emerson

"Mars Attacks" is a wonderfully funny and bizarre send up that should appeal to all ages. My 9 year old son was well amused by it. It is entertaining from start to finish with the opening scenes of the Kentucky Fried Cattle setting the stage for all sorts of strangeness and hilarity. There is a stellar cast of actors in this film , most of whom either get incinerated or experimented upon by the hideous Martians. "They're gross. I don't want them in the White House" remarks the President's wife. The Martians are deceitful and bloodthirsty ,zapping people with glee with their ray guns that look just like kids Super Shooters. TV presenters get turned into chihuahuas, a gum chewing beehived prostitute is not all who she appears to be and it is left to a senile granny to help save the day.Super film.

The Virgin Suicides [DVD] [2000]

The Virgin Suicides [DVD] [2000]

Rated: Suitable for 15 years and over
Staring: Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods, Kathleen Turner, Michael Paré
Director: Sofia Coppola

Sophia Coppola's alternately dreamy and unsettling film about five suburban sisters who all mysteriously kill themselves (the voice-over tells you as much in the first five minutes) casts a witchy spell that lingers like drugstore perfume on a hot day. Beautifully adapted from Jeffrey Eugenides' icily perfect novel (perhaps the best, if not only, work of fiction narrated exclusively in the first-person plural), the 1970s-set film is constructed as the collective memory of the neighbourhood boys who worshipped the beautiful Lisbon girls, blonde sylph-like teen siblings whose beauty and self-destruction still haunts and perplexes the narrators, now grown men.

Why did they do it? Maybe because their Catholic mother (Kathleen Turner, magnificently clenched) locked them all up when near-youngest daughter Lux (the exquisite Kirsten Dunst) stayed out all night after the prom. Maybe it was due to a kind of pubertal feminine hysteria, set off by the first suicide of the youngest daughter Cecilia. Maybe they were infected by a more general malaise (the film fairly teams with images of dying elm trees, infested lakes and fetid nastiness). Or maybe they will just never know what it's like, in the words of Cecilia, to be a 13-year-old girl.

Coppola has a canny eye for 1970s kitsch and the tawdry, touching magic totems of girlhood (tampons, bright bikinis, half-used make-up) and coaxes terrific deadpan performances both from the younger cast and the veterans. (James Woods as the nerdy Lisbon patriarch is as delightfully cast against type as Turner.) For all the languid gloom, there is great wit in the observation of 1970s decor and playful touches abound: airbrushed flashbacks like vintage Timotei commercials; inserts to reveal Lux has the name of her date magic markered on her knickers; teeth and eyes that sparkle unnaturally with post-production tricks. The soundtrack hits just the right wistful ironic note with a mix of period tunes by Todd Rungren, Gilbert O'Sullivan and the like, complemented by the electronica of French pop band Air (whose standalone efforts for the film are also available on a separate CD. A film as unforgettable as first love. --Leslie Felperin

With this all star cast,Kathleen turner is very ''serial mom'' but in a more sinister way, with James woods as her hen pecked, senile husband. He is also the teacher at the girls school.
At times this film will make you CRINGE (like when they ALLOW the girls to have a party which they BOTH host and attend) and at times make you laugh,in a grim way-when you realise-as we all do that kids will rebel no matter what!.
The plot is EXTREMELY clever-and will REALLY appeal to ANYONE who is interested in human behaviour,or phsychology,as this mum literally disciplines the life OUT of her beautiful daughters.
Gripping, captivating, very haunting, excellently cast AND played by ALL the actors- it IS a film you'll never forget, and probably recognise at least SOME of the behaviour from both the girls-AND the parents-either in your OWN childhood-OR someone you know!!!!!
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED-a thinking persons dream film!!! A++++++

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest [1975] [DVD]

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest [1975] [DVD]

Rated: Suitable for 18 years and over
Staring: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Michael Berryman, Peter Brocco, Dean R. Brooks
Director: Milos Forman

One of the key movies of the 1970s, when exciting, groundbreaking, personal films were still being made in Hollywood, Milos Forman's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest emphasised the humanistic story at the heart of Ken Kesey's more hallucinogenic novel. Jack Nicholson was born to play the part of Randle Patrick McMurphy, the rebellious inmate of a psychiatric hospital who fights back against the authorities' cold attitudes of institutional superiority, as personified by Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). It's the classic antiestablishment tale of one man asserting his individuality in the face of a repressive, conformist system--and it works on every level. Forman populates his film with memorably eccentric faces, and gets such freshly detailed and spontaneous work from his ensemble that the picture sometimes feels like a documentary. Unlike a lot of films pitched at the "youth culture" of the 1970s, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest really hasn't dated a bit, because the qualities of human nature that Forman captures--playfulness, courage, inspiration, pride, stubbornness--are universal and timeless. The film swept the Academy Awards for 1976, winning in all the major categories (picture, director, actor, actress, screenplay) for the first time since Frank Capra's It Happened One Night in 1931. --Jim Emerson

I have always been an avid fan of this movie classic. Jack Nicholson's character portrayal of Randall P MacMurphy is fantasically steeped in character and humour. The blu-ray image is detailed and absorbing, and the cinematic lustre of the original film has been updated. A sane "Jack the lad" driven insane by the misdeeds of those in authority in a US mental institution. Number 1 movie, first class transfer.

Hercules [DVD] [1997]

Hercules [DVD] [1997]

Rated: Universal, suitable for all
Staring: Tate Donovan, Josh Keaton, Roger Bart, Danny DeVito, James Woods
Director: Ron Clements, John Musker

Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in cinemas, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't scan), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton

I bought this DVD for my 3 year old Grandson based on customer reviews except the oldest review which I unfortunately missed out. If I had read it, I would have chosen another DVD.

I do agree that this movie is for slightly older children (6 or 7 +). My Grandson was very attentive to most of it but kept losing interest as he found it difficult to concentrate on the story, unable to relate to the humour and ancient Greek setting (temples, muses etc). Also, although humourous and funny to us, some of the 'nasty' characters and monsters that play a major role in the film with impressive effects, made him quite scared.

However, I feel this movie is fantastic all round and superbly produced. It is a must see but I would recommend Toy Story and Monsters Inc for the little ones!

I've seen 'Ruthless People' several times and it still makes me laugh. Showed it to my sister and her husband recently and they liked it so much wanting to see it again....so it became a birthday present and they are busy watching it with anyone they know. Danny DeVito is horribly good and Miss M is so lacking in taste as a character that you know why she married him. The interior design of their house is a real treat and should have won loads of awards...Bill Pullman's character is so funny, often unknowingly, that it's hilarious. The 'robbery' is priceless.I'd watch it again and again.
