One of the most gifted composers of his generation, Herbert Howells (1892-1983) once observed how "all through my life I've had this strange feeling that I somehow belonged to the Tudor period"; you can hear something of this deep-rooted quality in his sublime Christmas anthem of 1940, Long, Long Ago. If the incredibly moving motet Take Him, Earth, For Cherishing (written in 1963 for JFK's memorial service) remains probably the best-known piece here, the most substantial is surely the intensely personal Requiem (composed in 1933, but only published 48 years later), material from which resurfaces in Howells's 1938 choral masterpiece Hymnus Paradisi. Christopher Robinson and his exemplary St. John's forces lend equally sympathetic advocacy to the thrillingly sumptuous Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis written for St. Paul's Cathedral and the 1956 Communion Service based on material from the unforgettable 1943 Collegium Regale service that Howells wrote for King's College, Cambridge. Throw in fine performances by Iain Farrington of the Rhapsody No. 3 and Paean for organ (an instrument of which Howells was an absolute master) and you have a winner of an anthology, extremely well recorded. --Andrew Achenbach
Amazing, 2002-04-10 This recording is absolutely sublime - a must for anybody even remotely interested in English choral music. I bought it purely for the track "like as the hart," which has long been my favourite anthem, and I was not disappointed by the St. John's performance of it. However, the highlight of this CD for me is the singing of psalm 121; I have never heard it sung like this before. It is the most awe-inspiring piece and the voice of the baritone singing it is majestic. It would be worth ten times the price to hear this. I can honestly recommend this to you as an amazing buy.

Wonderful easy listening, 2007-12-27 I picked this up after I was transfixed by the track Otremare which was used in the film This Is England. I'd read that most of the music by Einaudi sounds similar, yet each track is unique. I couldn't agree more. This is hughly addictive stuff. Mostly piano with the occasional string instrument thrown in, this makes for a great listen while pottering about or just winding down. I don't listen to a great deal of music like this generally so I can't really compare it to anything else or even claim to understand why I like it. But I do really like it.

Paul Potts
    A singing success story, 2007-12-16
Paul Potts is a walking, singing example of how talent shows are so successful at both finding undiscovered talent and stirring the public into voicing their opinions and emotions so strongly towards that newly uncovered talent.
Opinions are generally divided between those who are able to take the singer for what he is (an ordinary guy with a natural gift for singing) and those who are grieved that his lack of operatic training has not hindered him in finding success in that music genre.
Technical perfection and music school education should not be prerequisites for being able to perform classical and operatic music, for history is rich with composers and artists who have found success with little or no formal training. Perhaps no better illustration of this is the famous Edward Elgar, a largely self-taught composer, who found difficultly in gaining recognition during his early years but whose talents as a classical composer are today unquestioned.
Paul Potts is a singer with a voice, and life story, to touch the hearts of those wanting to enjoy music for what it is - entertainment. Yes, I agree with the critics who claim he is not an opera singer, how could he be when he hasn't had the chance to walk onto that theatre stage yet?
What he has got however is a phenomenal talent for singing opera songs in a way which grabs the attention of those listeners who would often shy away from an area of music sometimes mistakenly regarded as only for the elitist high society.
It took courage for him to stand on that stage, and the public showed their love and admiration for him by electing him as winner so I think he deserves all the success he gets.

When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favourite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first major English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalise Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of colour and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a programme of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu". Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. --Thomas May
After "Romanza" I was not quite so keen on "Opera Arias", 2000-08-15 After "Romanza" I was not quite so keen on "Opera Arias", I dont think that the recording quite captured the fine voice of Andrea Bocelli, however I am not put off, and will go on to look for more CD's with more of his songs.

    Time to relax, 2008-05-12
A lovely 2CD Classic FM compilation of relaxing music - for mothers as much as their babies - consisting of an interesting assortment of baroque, classical, romantic and modern music with the underlying theme of aiming to relax the listener.
Some pieces are chosen partly for their title as well as the soothing effect they have, these include the 'Lullaby' by Brahms and 'The Swan' from 'Carnival of the Animals' by Saint-Saens. The more contemporary offerings are by popular composers such as Patrick Hawes. These are good recordings, as expected by Classic FM, many of which will be comfortably familiar to most of the radio shows listeners.
Comfortably safe by Classic FM maybe, but comfortably relaxing too.

A brilliant job of showmanship and programming, 2004-01-23 "The Only. . . " album may sound like a superficial pastiche to reviewer 1, but it isn't. I'm a classical music activist and an advocate for imaginative ways to reverse classical's decline. From this standpoint this product demonstrates first-rate creative showmanship and sophistication on the part of its producers. As the second reviewer indicates, the album does more than just stimulate impulse purchase. The outrageously inspired title was obviously designed to attract newcomers to classical. Having lured the uninitiated, a wrong start on the first track could be the last heard. The inspired choice of Orff, with his primal rhythms and simple harmonic structure, probably breaks with stereotypes people may have about classical. The listener then gets an abrupt change of pace with luscious, delicate ballet melodies by Delibes, followed by all-meat-and-no-potatoes romantic masterpieces in the Dvorak 9th Symphony (appropriately performed by a Czech orchestra) and the Grieg Peer Gynt Suite. The album includes popular classic hits like the Pachelbel Canon and Albinoni Adagio but embraces diverse styles ranging from Khatchaturian and Prokofiev to Bizet's the Pearl Fishers (opera) and Satie's Gymnopedie. Toward the end come full and unchopped performances of core classical repertory like the Bach instrumental suites and Vivaldi violin concerti (in dynamic, living-tradition style, led by James Galway). Reviewer No. 2 is on target. This is a superb present for newcomers. More experienced listeners can relax and enjoy masterly programming of great classics, executed by fine performers and ensembles.

Outstanding Tchaikovsky disc, 2003-10-23 Outstanding versions of Tchaikovskys three popular ballet suites. The Berlin Philharmonic is in glowing form and Mstislav Rostropovich on the rostrum sounds inspired as none else. Warmly and dynamically recorded, with plenty of orchestral detail, this thrilling disc may stand as a criterion from the analogue era. If you only need the suites, or if you think this music no longer holds any surprises for you, this is the CD to go for. Highly recommended.
