SERIOUSLY SUPERB, 2008-03-06 Yet more from Libera for my survival kit of their so peaceful, soothing and incredibly accomplished music. Every voice has, as ever, clearly been trained to perfection for its contribution to the overall fabulous blend, and in their skill the soloists really do defy belief, especially for singers who are so young. My only concern is the complexity of some of the solos and therefore the pressure for those who will be singing them live in high-profile concerts, etc. However, these appear always to have been risks that were carefully calculated by Libera's Director thus far, and I guess the same will be true again. New Dawn equals the very best of Libera to date, and that is praise indeed.

Long Live Classical Music, 2008-07-28 Classic FM has attempted to provide the classical music version of `rock anthems' to shake your head and punch the air to, an equivalent of Rainbow's `Long Live Rock 'n' Roll' anthem of the 1970's. Does it work? Yes of course it does because the Classic FM marketing team are in touch with the needs of today's classical music listeners.
The track list is comfortably predictable - Ride of the Valkyries (Wagner), Carmina Burana (Orff), Jupiter (from Holst's Planets), Pomp & Circumstance (Elgar's Land of Hope and Glory), A Night on a Bare Mountain (Mussorgsky) and many, many more.
Those `many more' include three outstanding performances - Alfie Boe's version of Nessun Dorma, David Garrett's virtuoso (and breathtakingly fast) violin performance of Flight of the Bumblebee, and a truly patriotic version of Rule, Britannia! by mezzo soprano Sarah Walker from the days when the Last Night of the Proms was bold enough to host a flamboyant, Union Flag clad woman displaying true unabashed patriotism.
Now THAT'S what I call an anthem, great stuff!

Great, even for older children, 2008-08-31 This was bought for my second child, who is now 2, but my 5 year old found it in the cd rack and wanted to listen to it, she loves it and insits on putting it on every night, she says it helps her to go to sleep! (and it does, I don't think she has even listened to the last few tracks as she is asleep before the end) Looking to buy some more now!

It's Been A Long Wait....., 2005-05-28 Rarely can the sobriquet "Great Recording of the Century" have been applied with greater justification than to this ever-fresh performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto by du Pre and Barbirolli. It is just wonderful and has been continuously in the EMI catalogue since its first release in 1965 - for most of the time at full price.EMI released this on CD back in 1986 (on CDC 7 47329 2) and the sound quality was disappointing to those brought up on the vinyl release. This time they have made amends - the sound quality is sensational. A back-room genius called Ian Jones has restored the dynamics and colour that made this a standout recording of its time. If you love this work and performance as I do, this release is worth every penny, even if you have the previous one.

Hayley Westenra Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Ian Dean
There are no words good enough, 2005-08-10 I first heard Hayley Westenra sing on classic Fm and had to have the album she has the best voice I have ever heard. This album's title describes her voice in one word-pure and the songs suite her voice so well especially never say goodbye, dark waltz and the maori songs. I love the bonus CD aswell especially Mary did you know? and Bridall Ballad- this CD is a must have Charlotte Church is not a patch on Hayley and always sounds as if the notes are being squeezed out of her-hayleys voice is beautiful. I love her version of Wuthering Heights as Hayley can actually reach the notes unlike Kate Bush who should learn to sing within her range.Buy this album and you will not regret it.

Aled Jones
Far from disappearing after hitting the pop charts with his famous schoolboy soprano rendition of "Walking in the Air" in 1985, Welsh singer Aled Jones has gone on to become one of the most consistent vocalists in Britain. His voice may have dipped to a baritone, but Jones has still shifted over six million records, entertained the Pope and the Queen, and has even become something of a minor television celebrity. One hit wonder, he isn't. You Raise Me Up collects together highlights from his 16 albums to date. Featuring many of his best-loved hits - "I Believe", "Silent Night", "Abide With Me", "Marble Halls" and, of course, the title track - Jones has also pulled off the wonderful masterstroke of re-recording "Walking in the Air", superimposing his current voice onto the original to create a most enchanting self-duet. Fans won't need much persuading to add this to their collection; and those who had Jones down as a novelty act might want to listen to this and think again.--Danny McKenna
Susie Veale, 2006-11-24 I eagerly await the release of this much anticipated album from Aled Jones in just days from now. I have all of his albums and each one has been a masterpiece, so the task of selecting 'the best' songs from these must have been a massive challenge, as all of his songs are wonderful and showcase the incredibly special quality of his gorgeous velvety voice.
Aled's previous albums have included some astonishing treats with the unique duets that he's created with his treble and baritone voices, so now on this "You Raise Me Up: the Best of Aled Jones" album, his baritone duet with his world-famous and award-winning treble rendition of "Walking In The Air", promises to be breathtaking.
Aled is set to raise us up yet again with this lovely album, and I can't wait!

classical gems, 2003-08-05 A treat for the solo guitar enthusiast, this is a sparkling collection of Spanish classics, full of drama and passion, played to perfection by John Williams. His technique is dazzling, with a purity and clarity even in the fast and fiery parts, and never a squishy note to be heard. The music takes us back to the mid 16th century with Alonso Mudarra's "Fantasia", which is short and charming, as well as another early composer, Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710), with his "Canarios", up to many 20th century masters like de Falla, Torroba, and the only non-Spaniard represented, the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos. Favorites include Albeniz' "Cordoba", which has a marvelous "rasqueado", and the familiar but exciting "The Miller's Dance" by de Falla, but every track is impressive on this CD, as well as entertaining, something solo guitar music occasionally fails to be.Having been reared by a mother who loved her guitar almost as much as her children, I have heard these pieces played often and by many great artists, but never better, or more enjoyably. This is a compilation that consists of previously released material, some from the 70's and 80's, and the sound throughout is excellent.
