Arooooow! Wolf Island Rocks, 2008-10-10 Another great installment from the horror master Darren Shan. Most of the action takes place on Wolf Island as the title suggests but moves the story on in terms of the genesis of the main character Grubbs Grady. Its fast paced and grisly but fun at the same time. It sets up nicely for the finale next year - I can't wait to see how all the loose ends tie up.

Raised *by* the dead? That doesn't sound right..., 2008-10-20 What one word best describes this tale of an infant whose whole family are murdered, and who toddles to the safety of a local graveyard, where he's raised and educated by the resident dead? That word, surprisingly, would be "charming".
And it is, in every sense of the word. It's eloquent without being condescending, comforting without being soft, sharp without being bitter, and it captivates your attention throughout its entirety, leaving you perfectly satisfied by the end.
The cast of characters are written to perfection. The dead maintain an eerie timelessness, whilst the other supernatural creatures are subtle yet distinct, ("Silas ate only one food, and it was not bananas"); the villains pull off the trick of being both evil *and* credible; the living have a refreshing mundane quality, and Bod the protagonist is left with the uneasy struggle of being neither fish nor fowl (nor dead).
A delight to read and a joy to think about.

Great Start to a Wonderful Series, 2008-10-12 Loved it! Wonderful characters, a swift moving plot, a deft sense of humour and a surprising ending--this book had it all. And unlike many series I've read, this one keeps getting better with each book. Claimed by Shadow, the sequel, is also a very strong title, and Embrace the Night, the third book in the series, is simply brilliant. The three work together to tell one complex and fascinating tale. Curse the Dawn, the fourth book, is out in April and I can't wait! If you're looking for something a bit different with a stronger plotline and better characterization than normal for genre fiction, this is it!

Non stop action, 2008-11-14 So many things happen in such a short space of time that there is no chance to be bored with this book. Everyone is still trying to assassinate Merry and her men, there are lots of cliff hanger moments and plenty of blood, but very little sex in this one.
I agree with some other reviewers that the rape is glossed over, but I think this is more to do with so much happening and Merry has not yet remembered it than being ignored by Hamilton.
The book left me itching to know what will happen in Los Angeles, will she ever be queen, how will the men who have spent little or no time outside faerie adapt to the human world, how will magic spread to the humans... I could go on and on with questions. All good books leave you with wanting more, and this one certainly left me waiting impatiently for the next Merry book.

It seems strange to find a 1954 vampire novel in Millennium's "SF Masterworks" classic reprints series. I Am Legend, though, was a trailblazing and later much imitated story that reinvented the vampire myth as SF. Without losing the horror, it presents vampirism as a disease whose secrets can be unlocked by scientific tools. The hero Robert Neville, perhaps the last uninfected man on Earth, finds himself in a paranoid nightmare. By night, the bloodthirsty undead of small-town America besiege his barricaded house: their repeated cry "Come out, Neville!" is a famous SF catchphrase. By day, when they hide in shadow and become comatose, Neville gets out his wooden stakes for an orgy of slaughter. He also discovers pseudoscientific explanations, some rather strained, for vampires' fear of light, vulnerability to stakes though not bullets, loathing of garlic, and so on. What gives the story its uneasy power is the gradual perspective shift which shows that by fighting monsters Neville is himself becoming monstrous--not a vampire but something to terrify vampires and haunt their dreams as a dreadful legend from the bad old days. I Am Legend was altered out of recognition when filmed as The Omega Man (1971), starring Charlton Heston. Avoid the movie; read the book. --David Langford
Hair raisingingly good stuff, 2008-08-03 This is a brilliant book, that manages to transcend the boundaries of Science Fiction or Horror genres. It was way ahead of its time.
I think its impact is down to its focus- rather than a overblown description of a post-apocalyptic world where everyone has turned into vampires, it concentrates on the experience of one man. You feel the claustrophobia of Neville as he shuts himself in his house every night, and you sympathise with his loneliness as the last normal man on earth. Even if you're not someone who normally enjoys SF books, this is so well written you can't help but love it.
The ending was so good it made all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. This isn't just a SF classic, it deserves to be an all-time classic novel.

Really good, 2008-01-11 Pleased to say that the third novel in the Demonata trilogy is just as good as the first 2! This time the story returns to Grubbs Grady (along with Bill-E and Dervish, of course). A famous horror movie director has heard about Dervishes collection of books about demons and wants his (and Grubb's) assistance in the making of her new movie - Slawter.
Dervish, Grubbs and Bill-E arrive on the isolated movie site and as soon as the first scene is shot - a scene in which a boy is killed by a demon - Grubbs knows that there is a big problem with the movie...it's using real deomons!.
Another brilliant entry in the Demonata Saga - so good I read it in one night. Highly reccommended.

Love story with a twist, 2008-11-15 Wow, I just finished reading this book and had to order the rest of the series immediately! I'm a sucker for a love story and this one had that in spades plus a good dollop of thiller mixed in. I'm a notoriously slow reader but I couldn't wait to get through each working day just to get home and start reading again, it pulls you in and is so easy to read I finished it in 3 evenings (and a couple of hours this morning!).
There were actually times I felt breathless reading it, from the building romance to the edge of my seat thriller I loved every second. I can see that it's aimed more towards teenagers but I'm in my late 20's and would happily recommend this to any of my friends who wanted a good story to read.
I can't wait for the rest of them to arrive and I hope they don't disappoint after this fantastic start.
