The God Delusion

The God Delusion

Author: Richard Dawkins
By Black Swan

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 Inspiring, delicately constructed and brilliant funny, 2008-10-30
It was suggested to me that I read this book by a friend who had developed a sincere interest in analysing religion and the world around him in a matter-of-fact, understandable and logical way and this book certainly does that.

I would say it's the most provocative book I've read recently and it certainly encourages further discussion about very important points. One only needs to see the amount of internet activity generated by readers of this book arguing their views back and forth on hundreds of sites to realise that.

I find myself referring back to it alot when talking to friends about the arguments it contains. Almost every pro-religious counter-argument is dealt with eruditely and succinctly by Dawkins in his normal annihilating way.

I approached the book as an agnostic leaning on atheism but not-really-that-sure and finished the book much the same way but certainly someone more enlightened and more interested in the world around me.

I would recommend it to anybody who is interested in seeing things through a perhaps different perspective and is not afraid of the ways that other people see the world. Dawkins' view may be one-sided but in his defense, I am certain there are very few religious texts that give as much as a nod to the possibility of atheism. Those who are religious may find it insulting in places so you might have to have your "shields up" for some chapters.. however I think the view Dawkins gives is a very interesting way to see the world and how it works, which is worth at least giving some thought to.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book]

The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book]

Author: Eric Carle
By Puffin

Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a perennial favourite with children and adults alike. Its imaginative illustration and clever cut-out detail charts the progress of a very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week.

This board book edition of what is surely a classic picture book is glossy, sturdy and ideal for curious little hands to get to grips with. (Ages 9 months to 2 years)--Susan Harrison

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great little book. It keeps my daughter occupied for hours on end. Just a quick flick through it is enough to convince any adult that a small child will like it. Simplistic, enjoyable and charming. And actually quite funny.
Well recommended for very small kids.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Dummies

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Dummies

By John Wiley & Sons

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 An excellent self-help book, 2007-11-08
I cannot commend this book highly enough, speaking as someone who has benefitted greatly from the common sense approach of CBT described in this book. It is written in an easy to understand manner and I felt immediate benefits from reading this book. CBT won't change your life overnight but if you are prepared to put in the effort then I have found that my life is changing for the better. Old, negative ways of thinking, which I had believed would never change, have been replaced with a more positive attitude and outlook.

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable

By Penguin

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 most insightful book I've read in a long time, 2008-10-18
Yes, I understand the criticism that Mr Taleb is full of himself - undoubtedly it shows throughout the book.
However, the amount of insights he provides and the many different angles in which he looks at the problem hammers the point through our hard-wired brains, and in my case, provided a fundamental change to the way I think and approach problems.
Definitely, a must read book.

I bought this book on a whim, but was very glad I did. The style is engaging and the reader is taken through research methodology and statistics in a logical and simple manner, without resorting to equations. The author is obviously passionate about his subject, which occasionally come across as being a little angry (mainly at the media and various quacks, some of whom come in for a lot of stick), but I can forgive him that as I was getting a little angry about how science is presented by the media (being a scientist myself).

In his inimitable style Bruce is bringing attention to one of the biggest scandals in the modern world, no less than the destruction of the most important habitat on our planet. It's something our generation will go down in history for and nobody is doing anything to stop it. More power to Bruce for showing how even some of the people destroying the forest are just trying to survive. We won't begin to tackle this issue until we appreciate that there are no easy answers (if you want a good summary of why the Amazon and other environments are so precious I'm a big fan of Bruce's other book Serious Survival as well).

Outliers: The Story of Success

Outliers: The Story of Success

Author: Malcolm Gladwell
By Allen Lane

Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5 Sheer nonsense!, 2008-11-21
Gladwell always tries to take a common topic of interest and put an unusual spin on it. In this case he has spun out of control. In this book he tries desperately to identify which factors make a person successful. There is no logical sequence - nor any logic at all to this book. Gladwell jumps around from one haphazzard topic to the next, grasping at straws, throwing in some spurious statistics to identify what set of factors makes a person successful.

As we all know, success is the result of knowing what you want and focusing on it. Whilst he may bring up a few interesting points, to wade through the content of the book for a highlight here and there is simply not worth it. In a nutshell, this book is boring, and does not add value to the reader. Rather read the autobiography of a successful person like Branson. (Branson's new book : "Business Sripped Bare" will give you far more insight into a multitude of success factors than the theoretical nonsense contained in Outliers!)

Why Don't Penguins' Feet Freeze?: And 114 Other Questions

I wasn't sure about this book, but then I bought DO ANTS HAVE ARSEHOLES? And laughed myself silly. This book is on the same scale.

The book contains questions we've all wondered about, but were afraid to ask. And here they are. With the answers. The great thing about WHY DON'T PENGUINS' FEET FREEZE is that it can be read by adults and children. PG rating. The ideas range from history to physics, to chemistry and strophysics, so you won't be bored, but neither will you be overwhelmed. For other great books, I'd reommend DON'T STOP ME NOW and the book DRESS YOUR FAMILY IN CORDUORY by David Sedaris.
