Ignore those people who were epic fail, if you GET it, this works, 2008-08-09 Like, really. If you want to feel optimistic about being a non-smoker rather than dreading the rest of your life without your little poisonous crutch, then buy this book.
Some reviewers have asserted that Carr is wrong to say that smokers don't really enjoy it. But he isn't. I used to call smoking my "toxic panacea" and I could rhapsodise about the physical and mental joys of smoking and genuinely mean it.
Then I read this book.
My life will never be the same again, because I am free. Normal "giving up smoking" methods are doomed to failure whereas if you understand what Carr is saying, you are going to succeed, and walk away from your prison with joy.
Okay so he isn't the greatest writer in the world and at times I found his style a bit patronizing, but they would be the crappest excuses not to stop smoking ever.
Do try this book if you want to be free of smoking.

fascinating, 2008-10-22 a well written and witty look at hundreds of mathematical puzzles, stories and jokes. I am a maths teacher and there is so much material here, it's amazing. I have already used a few of these with my classes and the puzzles have really caught their imagination. Highly recommended
although the solution to the problem on page 143 is wrong

12 years on, still using it..., 2007-07-01 When I had post-natal depression, OCD (cleaning...) and agoraphobia, my GP referred me to a psychologist. Who sat me down with this book. We worked through it, chapter by chapter. As a medical professional, I was familiar with the concepts, but hadn't been able to see clearly enough to put them into practice for myself. Within 18 months, I was living a full normal life and haven't had a panic attack since. 12 years on, I still refer other people to this book, use it with my own clients, and use the techniques to get me through exams, interviews and public speaking. Brilliant.

Rock solid scientific evidence and easy-to-folllow advice, 2007-12-20 The book is great. It presents many scientific data without being boring or worse incomprehensible for lay-people and it gives plenty of good advice. I myself have a four month old son and I have greatly profited from the book. Many parents who come to visit my wife and me find my son sociable, smiling and happy. In my opinion this book is a must for parents and people who work in nurseries and in general with newborns and small children.

most insightful book I've read in a long time, 2008-10-18 Yes, I understand the criticism that Mr Taleb is full of himself - undoubtedly it shows throughout the book.
However, the amount of insights he provides and the many different angles in which he looks at the problem hammers the point through our hard-wired brains, and in my case, provided a fundamental change to the way I think and approach problems.
Definitely, a must read book.

Bruce rocks!, 2008-10-10 In his inimitable style Bruce is bringing attention to one of the biggest scandals in the modern world, no less than the destruction of the most important habitat on our planet. It's something our generation will go down in history for and nobody is doing anything to stop it. More power to Bruce for showing how even some of the people destroying the forest are just trying to survive. We won't begin to tackle this issue until we appreciate that there are no easy answers (if you want a good summary of why the Amazon and other environments are so precious I'm a big fan of Bruce's other book Serious Survival as well).

Turns life inside out, 2008-10-28 The author writes about living things as if the gene is the animal and the animal is simply a seed for the gene. He basically turns life inside out. It's a powerful mind tool to get a different perspective on life but don't get too carried away with the idea. The whole theory of evolution is valuable in understanding the world but like a lot of science it starts to become too difficult to use. So in conclusion I don't believe that the author has discovered the secret of life, he just has another way of looking at things that you may find useful. It should be one of the books you have read.

Quantum Theory - The Human Story, 2008-10-17
This is fascinating book written as a narrative history of those scientists who contributed to the development of Quantum Theory - one of the most important challenges to orthodox thinking in the whole history of ideas.
The book does a very good job of establishing how classical physics of the 19th Century was seen as completed and except for a few minor details that needed tidying up, the consensus was that nothing really fundamental at a theoretical level was left to discover.
Kumar explores how this certainty that physics was done and dusted came to unravel and how an idea as counter intuitive as the quantum came to be accepted by most physicists.
This manner of exploring quantum theory through its historical development allows anyone with a basic grasp of science to understand why it is so revolutionary in its implications. At the centre of this story is the struggle between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr about what our attitude to the reality should be.
Mixing historical narrative with the scientific ideas that were in contention brings quantum theory to a much broader audience of readers than is generally possible with this sort of material.
Part social history, part popular science as well as raising questions of a philosophical nature - this makes a cracking read and comes highly recommended.
