John Boyne's The Boy in Striped Pyjamas will no doubt acquire many readers as a result of the subsequent film of the novel, but viewers of the latter would do themselves a favour by going back to the spare and powerfully affecting original book. Bruno is nine years old, and the Nazis’ horrific Final Solution to the âJewish Problem’ means nothing to him. He's completely unaware of the barbarity of Germany under Hitler, and is more concerned by his move from his well-appointed house in Berlin to a far less salubrious area where he finds himself with nothing to do. Then he meets a boy called Shmuel who lives a very different life from him -- a life on the opposite side of a wire fence. And Shmuel is the eponymous boy in the striped pyjamas, as are all the other people on the other side of the fence. The friendship between the two boys begins to grow, but for Bruno it is a journey from blissful ignorance to a painful knowledge. And he will find that this learning process carries, for him, a daunting price. A legion of books have attempted to evoke the horrors of the Second World War, but in this concise and perfectly honed novel, all of the effects that John Boyne creates are allowed to make a maximum impact in a relatively understated fashion (given the enormity of the situation here). The Boy in Striped Pyjamas is also that rare thing: a novel which can affect both children and adults equally; a worthy successor, in fact, to such masterpieces as To Kill a Mockingbird and The Catcher in the Rye -- both, of course, books, dealing (as does this one) with the loss of innocence. --Barry Forshaw
Boy in the striped Pyjamas, 2008-11-13 Unfortunatley, I have not been gifted with the best imagination and therefore often lose interest in many books I read. Not in this case I could not put it down. I loved it from page one. It was written so brilliantly through the eyes of this innocent young boy and yet leaving you under no illusions as to what exactly is going on. I have already passed it on to 3 of my friends who have all loved it as much as I have. Definately the best book I have read. Best read without finding out any information on the book or storyline allowing you to take this journey with Bruno with no preconceptions. The Film based on the book recently released comes nowhere close to the greatness of this book, do not see it first!

Raised *by* the dead? That doesn't sound right..., 2008-10-20 What one word best describes this tale of an infant whose whole family are murdered, and who toddles to the safety of a local graveyard, where he's raised and educated by the resident dead? That word, surprisingly, would be "charming".
And it is, in every sense of the word. It's eloquent without being condescending, comforting without being soft, sharp without being bitter, and it captivates your attention throughout its entirety, leaving you perfectly satisfied by the end.
The cast of characters are written to perfection. The dead maintain an eerie timelessness, whilst the other supernatural creatures are subtle yet distinct, ("Silas ate only one food, and it was not bananas"); the villains pull off the trick of being both evil *and* credible; the living have a refreshing mundane quality, and Bod the protagonist is left with the uneasy struggle of being neither fish nor fowl (nor dead).
A delight to read and a joy to think about.

Craft your own couture paper clothing. Plastic stencil shapes make it simple to trace perfectly proportioned skirts, scarves, sweaters, shoes and more. Cut each piece out of the array of double-sided, acid-free patterned papers and then mix and match them any way you like. Embellish your designs with sequins, ribbon and other decorative items. Finally, hang show off your outfits on the tiny hangers (included). Ages 8 and up.
Hours of fun, 2008-04-16 Both my children (aged 10 and 8) and I loved the original paper fashions book but this latest one is superb. It arrived yesterday and we spent the whole evening making glitzy outfits. The book has loads of ideas, the "fabrics" are shimmery and glamorous and the templates are sturdy and easy to use. We highly recommend it.

A Fantastic end to a Brilliant Series, 2008-11-07 This book was thoroughly enjoyable to read, and after reading all of the previous of the Young Bond series this was no worse than the others. I can't say it was any better as they are simply amazing page turners which have you going for 'just one more chapter'. I read both (young) James Bond and Alex Rider and the two are both superb.
This is worth the pennies, so go and get it NOW! If you haven't read the first 4, do that!
100% great.

The best book I have ever read!, 2008-11-19 Well I ordered Twilight from amazon as a bit of a change to my normal reading material. I usually stick with stuff like Harry Potter, Eragon, stuff with lots of magic and other worlds.
Twilight is absolutely addictive. I opened it on my lunch break at work and finished it the same evening.
I love the way the author steers away from the typical vampire trends and I absolutely adore that there is a massive love element to the story but not in the usual corny way.
Im not the best review writer so the rest of the good reviews on here will do the book more justice but i would deffo recommend anyone to read this book. I am obsessed and waiting for the next 3 books to be delivered.
A work of art.

Pure Genius!!!, 2008-09-15 I can't even explain the fantastic plot twists that riddle this book.
The tension of one Criminal Genius against another, with an old, surprise character from earlier in the series it's completely enthralling.
both Artemis's have trouble hanging on to life especially when K....... comes into the fray!

Christopher Paolini
By
Doubleday
The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini -- of which Brisingr is the latest -- shows every sign of becoming one of the most exuberant and entertaining fiction sequences in modern writing, with a scope and ambition that genuinely takes the breath away. This is a fantasy world which is cleverly designed to appeal to the widest possible range of readership; the inevitable echoes of JRR Tolkien are transformed into something rich and strange here, and the events of the earlier books are being drawn together in the later developments with masterly assurance. After the massive, punishing battle against the Warriors of the Empire, Eragon and Saphira are licking their wounds, having barely survived. The Rider and his dragon have an oath to fulfil; they must aid Katrina in escaping the most terrible danger. What follows is an epic journey, quite as action-packed and vividly described as anything in fantasy fiction. As in all the best such literature, the odds are overwhelming, nothing can be taken at face value, and the evil forces ranged against the protagonists are as vile as one could wish. Christopher Paolini clearly now feels that he has readers securely in his pocket, and is prepared to take his time to achieve some of his best effects -- a tactic that pays dividends. So often with fantasy fiction, outlandish situations are relied upon to carry the action, and there is no shortage of them here. But Paolini is canny enough to realise that the characterisation of an endangered protagonist is crucial to maintain our involvement, and (as in previous books), he always takes care of business in this regard. Don't be put off by the daunting length of this book -- Paolini justifies every word in Brisingr. You'll find yourself reading it as quickly as many a shorter book. --Barry Forshaw
Brisingr, 2008-11-17 My 9 year old son and I have LOVED this series and can't wait for the fourth and final book. We both wish we could be dragon riders and are totally captivated by the relationship between Eragon and Saphira. The story can be a bit gruesome at times, but it is also touching and funny as well as exciting and totally un-put-downable! We recommend it!

His best book so far, 2008-11-05 Terry is one of those who understands the meaning of life - which can't be put into words, it can only be hinted at through story - it can't be grasped by the conscious mind, it can only be felt through the spirit. This book contains more of his wisdom than any previous book, while still being a thoroughly entertaining read. It makes you feel really alive. The prologue alone filled me with joy - it is the best creation story I have read for a long time - full of truth.

Meyer ends the Twilight Saga with an epic and absoluitely unmissable finale, 2008-11-09 I cannot speak highly enough of this book, Breaking Dawn is without a doubt the best book in a fantastic series. Its written so well, the plot flows excellently and there are thrilling twists and turns that I haven't experienced with any other book I've read. In my opinion Stephenie Meyer is one of the best authors of all time, she never fails to deliver and I cannot wait for her next work.
This book is a MUST BUY
