R Shiller
By
Princeton University Press
an essential handbook for bubble spotters, 2008-08-05 Shiller's is a concise attempt to elaborate in just seven chapters the genesis of the housing bubble (a psychological carry-over from the dotcom bubble), explode its myths ("prices always go up"), explore its scale and the dangers of its deepening impact (it's bad), assert the need to maintain confidence in our economic and financial institutions by aggressive action (comparing the US and European responses to the Great Depression), and then explore longer-term, more fundamental reforms and innovations that will create a population much more attuned to economic risk.
Shiller says his inspiration was John Maynard Keynes 'The Economic Consequences of the Peace', which I take to mean that getting the subprime solution wrong could have devastating consequences.
At less than 200 pages of wide-margined type, lightly annotated and with no bibliography, there is something of the emergency pamphlet about this book. And Shiller is advocating a much speedier and more deep-rooted response to the crisis, which, as of a few weeks ago, he felt was still not being taken seriously enough.
There are many recommendations, but if the scale of the problem is as suggested, I'd argue that it's a book that everyone who lives in a house (and who is of reading age) should own; just don't buy ten and try to rent them out.

Paul Arden

Thought provoking and useful for everyone, 2008-07-26 Paul Arden's book is a like a breath of fresh air compared to many help or guidebooks out there. The way he combines the images and photographs to highlight the message of the text reflects why he's so well renowned. For someone who isn't involved with advertising or marketing I expected to take away only a limited amount from reading this book. I was pleasantly surprised.
The snapshot way in which the ideas are presented keeps you constantly engaged and thinking. Thought provoking ideas such as - "Don't look for the next opportunity, the one you have in hand is the opportunity" and how we might want to get off a certain job but it could just be the best work we ever do. The idea of "Don't put on a speech, give a show" really hit home. I do speeches and thought that's why people were there, Paul tells us differently.
There's a lot here that everyone who want's to think and act differently will benefit from. A book that you'll read in one sitting and then read over and again. So in case you didn't know, don't covet your ideas and present on a Tuesday.

Recommendation, 2008-12-22 As a college student majoring in business administration I found buy-ology by Martin Lindstrom to be filled with great information that we haven't covered in our classes. I'm sure that what I learned from this book I will put to use now and it will also be a valuable asset to me when I enter the workforce.
I like the idea of using studies based on scientific knowledge and I also like the fact that these studies were global.
I've read several books on the subject of marketing and trying to read into the mind of the consumer, but this is the first book to really get to the heart of the matter and to offer scientific data to back everything up.
I enjoyed the book and gained a lot from it. I plan to recommend it to my classmates to use as a good resource

Gave me new found confidence, 2008-09-12 I read this book whilst on holiday and started using the techniques described right away with people I met.
As someone who always "felt" that people did really like me until they got to know me and, if I am honest, a bit of a "people hater" myself, I was totally shocked at how actually "listening" and confirming what you heard (paraphrasing) helps you gain their trust instantly! How little I knew about communication before I read this!
When on holiday I actually had people telling me "I knew from the moment we shook hands that you were a really likable guy" - WOW!
This came only from taking more notice during introductions to new people and REMEMBERING what they said during conversations and then simply confirming in YOUR OWN words what they said. I have found new skills within that I never knew I possessed.
As someone who is in business, I was constantly moping around wondering why I even bothered meeting potential clients (or time wasters as I used to call them). I had actually got to the point where I had given up trying. I could not wait to get back off of holidays and try my new persuasion skills on unsuspecting clients. Yesterday I confirmed £5000 worth of work with one client and today 2 new contracts worth £7000! I now actually look forward to meeting people (after correctly qualifying the leads - something else I was foolishly missing out on before I read this book) and challenging myself and my new power of persuasion.
I paid a fiver for this book in the airport 3 weeks ago. It has helped me improve my relationship with my wife, helped me gain more friends, and won me £12000 of work - all in 3 weeks. If I was single, no doubt I would be out pulling the ladies too! I am now hooked on "self help" reads. Give me more James Borg! You are a bloody genius!

Great book, at least for complete beginners, 1999-05-11 I'm probably moving toward the "selling" sector and I found my first book (this) great, even if I've read only the first three chapters by now. These are full of really interesting things, easy to read and to remember, too.

Web Analytics: A must for ever web team, 2007-08-01 I'm not a web analyst. Nor am I a statistician. However I've just finished reading `Web Analytics: An Hour a Day' and I feel like I could do a pretty good job of the former without being daunted by the latter.
It all comes down to one concept - that of a data driven decision making culture. Or put another way, how to maximise the return on all your hard work. Avinash describes it wonderfully and provides lots of useful advice about how to achieve it.
If that sounds dull, fear not - Avinash does a much better job of making it interesting and exciting.
If you're a web analyst, you shouldn't need this review to convince you to buy the book - read some of Avinash's blog posts and you'll soon work it out for yourself. If you're not an analyst but you're involved in managing a website or sites you'll find it incredibly refreshing and useful (failing that make sure at least one person one your web team has read it).
Personally I can't recommend it highly enough. You don't have to read it cover to cover, and even the most experienced web professionals should find plenty to think about.

The Bible for Any Freelance Photographer, 2002-03-04 This book is an excellent resource for any Freelance Photographer looking to get their work publish. The book not only gives you the contact details of the right person to send your work to, but also give full details of what they are looking for, what format to shoot in and how much you can expect to be paid. If you want to have an advantage over other photographers or writers submitting work, then this is it.I bought the book many years ago, and now buy the new version every year. Andrew...
