This is surely one of the most important publications of the decade. Daniel Mendelsohn's triumph is to transpose Cavafy's poems with utmost skill and sensitivity into English versions which are truthful in every sense. He has the pitch-perfect ear of a poet, and finds miraculous equivalences for Cavafy's tone, rhythms and cadences. Cavafy's poetic thinking is realized in English, in all its complex splendor. Daniel's introduction and notes are masterly, and offer many compelling insights into Cavafy's life's work. I am very grateful to him for bringing me a Cavafy in English which is truthful, and so poetically successful.

The Brand You 50: Reinventing Work

The Brand You 50: Reinventing Work

Author: Tom Peters
By Alfred A. Knopf

If Dilbert and Tom Peters ever attended the same party, they'd probably find themselves in opposite corners. The cynical cartoon character would have a hard time in Peters's upbeat, high-energy world of "Cool-Beyond-Belief." The Brand You 50 is Peters's manifesto for today's knowledge workers. It joins his Reinventing Work series, which includes The Projects 50 and The Professional Service Firm 50.

In The Brand You 50, Peters sees a new kind of corporate citizen who believes that surviving means not blending in but standing out. He believes that "90+ per cent of White Collar Jobs will be totally reinvented/reconceived in the next decade" and that job security means developing marketable skills, making yourself distinct and memorable, and developing your network ability. His list-filled prescriptions cover everything; for example, "You are Your Rolodex I: BRAND YOU IS A TEAM" (no. 22), "Consider your 'product line'" (no. 25), "Work on your Optimism" (no. 35), "Sell. SELL. SELL!!!" (no. 47). While the book is overwhelming at times--its hyperactive typography pretty much shouts at you--any baby boomer thinking about his or her career will find much to consider. --Harry C Edwards, Amazon.com

There has been a lot written and said about how white collar employees will start acting like free agents in sports. This trend is already well advanced with software writers and other scarce professionals. Tom Peters has moved well beyond what has already happened to create a useful portrait of how to play this new role in order to have the most satisfaction and success. Further, he asserts that those in the non-scarce areas like human resources, purchasing, and so forth had better do the same thing . . . because 90% of these jobs will be gone in 10 years. I sometimes think that Tom Peters overstates things, but in this one area I think he is understating what needs to be done. Whether you are an employee, want to start your own firm, have friends and children who want good careers, or have just lost your job, this is an extremely important book on how to take charge of your own career (and to help those you care about do the same) to create the most benefit for those you serve (your clients, in Peters parlance)and yourself. Although you will recognize all of the ideas from having seen them elsewhere before, you will find the way he has woven them together to be practical, mutually-supportive and thought-provoking. I know that I got several good ideas from this book. As a business book author who helps people get a lot more with less ... and in less time, I found an additional benefit. This book is a great profile of how to be Tom Peters, the world's most successful business guru. I found this to be his most self-revealing book, and although I have always liked his work, I found that liked him personally a lot better as a result of what he shows about himself. If you are a Tom Peters fan, be sure to add this book to your reading list! You'll be glad you did. You'll live a much more interesting, meaningful, productive life as a result. This book is part of his 3 book series: Reinventing Work. I also recommend his book, Professional Service Firm 50, and you can read my comments about that book on that book's page on Amazon.com.

Absolutely amazing!

Anyone who has seen Ric Burns'televison work (eg American Civil War) will know what to expect. This is a meticulously researched book but moves along with the pace of a best-seller. The picture selection is amazing too. What I found particularly good is the inclusion of short essays from a number of top=notch US historians - often providing contrasting viewpoints on key issues to those expressed by Burns.

This book should be compulsory reading for anyone visiting New York. It precisely outlines the cpaitalist-democratic dynamic that makes Gotham what it is.

A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century

A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century

This is first class history. Tuchman presents us with a fourteenth century which is falling apart, ripped to shreds by the unmitigated brutality of a ruling elite who have failed utterly to control their passions: greed, stupidity , anger . These very passions that plunged the 20th century into darkness and to War. She concludes that the 14th and 20th centuries are mirrors of each other. There is a poignancy and nobility in her discourse. She expresses that most noble of all historian's attributes-empathy without which the study of history is pointless. Anybody who wishes to understand how a society reacts when its value system is undermined should read this book. It is a masterwork.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Before I start the story that is Nick and Norah, I decided we needed to get some misconceptions out of the way first.

1) I don't live in Manhattan, so I won't understand what the characters are talking about. Wrong! I don't live in Manhattan--actually, I've never been farther East than Ohio, but I still got the gist of the story quite easily. Sure, I might never have visited Times Square, but I've been on the Square in my hometown (population 3,400), and the same types of things went on there that go on in New York.

2) This book is full of cursing. Right! And if you haven't heard a lot of curse words (do I really need to spell them out?), especially from the mouths of teens, in the last twenty years or so, I'm guessing you live on a commune somewhere in the middle of Utah.

3) This book only covers one night. Right again! And oh, what a night it is! One night, filled with all the ups, downs, and sideways that being a teen in todays world brings.

Now that we've got that out of the way, we can concentrate on the story. It's about Nick, a bassist for a band with an ever-changing name, who recently had his heart broken by a b***h named Tris. It's about Norah, an uber-complicated girl with more issues than The National Enquirer, who not too long ago had her virginity broken by Tal. And then there's Caroline, and Jessie, and Uncle Lou, not to mention Dev and Thom, and Randy from Are You Randy?, and Hunter from Hunter. There's beer, and
there's drugs, and there's sex, although none of it is Nick or Norah's.

There's heartbreak, and devastation, and lust, and forgiveness, and acceptance. There's parents to deal with, and friends to attempt to deal with, and a boy and a girl who wish that, just once, they could be themselves and not deal at all. There's a love story, and a song about a girl on a street in the middle of the night, and a band that just might make it big, and a car that won't start, and a subway ride that requires jumping the turnstyle.

There's love, and anger, and disappointment, and desperation, and redemption. There's life, and then there's Nick and Norah. There's a story here, and you need to read it.

The New Orleans Cookbook: Creole, Cajun, and Louisiana French Recipes Past and Present

As a native of Louisiana no longer living in the Bayou State, I often have an "envie" (that's cajun dialect for "yearning") for the food I grew up with. I got my first copy of this book in 1975 and have cooked with it ever since. It is particularly strong on the classic New Orleans recipes--oysters rockefeller, trout veronique, Bananas Foster--but also covers some basic stuff like how to make a good Bechamel sauce, hollandaise. It is also quite good at Cajun cooking. Most people outside of Louisiana think you can make anything "Cajun" by dousing it with Tabasco--not so. It's a far subtler cuisine than that, generally no spicier than Szechuan and certainly less spicy than Thai. The recipes for Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, Chicken Macquechoux, and similar stuff have been used so often the pages are sticky with spatterings of oil and roux. I prefer this GREATLY to Paul Prudhomme's book. (I have both and rarely use Paul's.) If you are interested in a strictly Cajun cookbook and not in something which has New Orleans cuisine, I might recommend Justin Wilson's Homegrown Louisiana Cooking. Still, The New Orleans Cookbook is by far my most-used Louisiana cookbook, and one of the most used cookbooks in my kitchen.
