I have to disagree with many of these reviews. Ofc it's not as good as God Emporor.... but what is?? Nothing in my opinion. Admittidly, if you read this expecting anouther "Dune..", then you will be dispointed. But this is not Frank Herbert. The story IS engrossing, if not a little rushed toward the end, and builds towards a climatic ending.

If your a fan, read it. I'm sure you can make your own mind up. Don't be put off by the nay sayers, but don't expect Frank's ghost to start recounting tales of the end of the universe....

The continuation of this incredibe series is simply amazing. I was hooked from the first page. The way the chapters are divided to follow the different major characters kept me reading the entire book until I'd finished it. The intrigue and plot twists are timed to perfection and the end of the story left me wanting the next book immediately.

Anderson's third installment in this amazing opera again makes for addictive reading. At first, one may think this series to be B rate at best. Aliens seemingly made from the elements themselves battling across the universe destroying entire planets and stars. But instantly upon opening the cover it becomes clear that this is anything but. With every single character having a story to tell and all the room needed in which to tell it, each book is several stories rolling together on a journey. With aliances forming between the roamers and Therons, the Ildiran empire in uphevel, the Hansa doing what a corporation does best, expanding, King Peter moving on the sly and the Wentals being their mysterious and cryptic selves, Anderson still finds the time leave the final page as a hugely unexpected twist from the world forest Verdani. This adventure gets better with every book. Indeed with every page.

Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5 Another success for the Dune series, 2010-01-08
It was no surprise to find the same excellent writing style and plot as are found in the other books of the Dune series.

This one fills in more gaps in the story from when Paul Muad'Dib walked into the desert and, interestingly, about Bronso of IX.

I am still amazed that perfect continuity has been achieved with every book. The Winds of Dune is no exception. I don't know how much of an outline Frank Herbert left for the "big picture" of the Dune universe but everything fits extremely well with all the story told thus far.

Much like "Paul of Dune" and the books based on the stories of the individual families it does not follow a linear track. However it does not seem to matter too much whether it is read in Chronological order (to the story) ,in order to understand, or the order in which they were released.

If you are new to the Dune series or have only read the core three titles I would strongly recommend working through the entire collection. The complexities of the story and the interlocked and bewildering relationships between the different characters is, in my opinion, unrivalled by any other series I have read. There is something satisfying when all the pieces fall together and a new understanding is reached about the characters and the Dune universe. Wilbur Smith has a similar kind of interlocked story going on in his series but that is a different genre (Another on of my favourites).

So..... all in all, this addition to the Dune universe is just as good as those that came before, the characters retain the feeling that you can relate to their problems and feel as though you are there, watching events unfold, in your imagination. I cannot fault this worthy addition to the Dune collection.

this is the second book in the trilogy and i have enjoyed both books and the third should be the best of all,
this is really a fantasy epic along with the best.
there is also a trilogy of cd,s to with the books, the first by roswell six is prog rock at it,s best.
however the second cd lacks erik norlander, gary werhcamp, lana lane and james labrie and the music is by henning pauley who
has produced some fine music.
but oh dear, whoever chose the vocalists for this cd has made a an error,it really needed jorn lande, mark boals and maybe orianthi.
lets hope the third cd has all the big hitters back and more to get this epic series completed.

This is the 6th in a series of 7 books. It is the most engaging and imaginative science fiction I have ever read, and I have been an SF devotee for 50 years. Three of us have been reading the series and we all agree, you cannot put each book down once started. For serious readers of future off-world fiction, do start at book 1, its essential. Each book builds upon the previous while introducing utterly unexpected plot and character development. Characters are realistic and multi-faceted, painted in detail by the author who cleverly interweaves their tales. The book takes the reader into the heart of several complex alien cultures: by book 6, seven exotic races have been introduced, both allied and opposing humans, plus 3 methods of inter-stellar travel. Humans themselves have colonised many planets, each with their own culture and suffered a major schism with the space-travelling Roamer clans. If you like good SF, as opposed to simplistic stuff where the hero always wins, then this series is a "must-read".Metal Swarm (Saga of Seven Suns 6)
